The Mercedes-Benz Active Body Control (ABC) system is an intricate network that manages the vehicle’s hydraulic active suspension. This system is pivotal in controlling body roll, pitch, and dive, ensuring a smooth and stable ride in various driving conditions. Key components of the ABC system include:

  • Hydraulic Pump: The heart of the system, providing the necessary hydraulic pressure.

The primary purpose of the rodeo test is to flush out the old hydraulic fluid from the ABC system. Over time, this fluid degrades and becomes contaminated, which can lead to significant problems. Contaminated fluid can damage sensitive sensors, wear out the hydraulic pump prematurely, and even cause ruptures in pulsation accumulators and dampers.

During a rodeo test, certified mechanics utilize specialized computer diagnostic tools to activate the ABC pump. This activation circulates pressurized hydraulic fluid through all suspension struts. As the fluid moves through the system, the vehicle undergoes a series of controlled movements, resembling a “bucking bronco” or a rodeo, hence the name. This controlled movement systematically adjusts the suspension height at each wheel corner, effectively bleeding out the old, contaminated fluid and calibrating the suspension system. The rodeo test ensures complete flushing of the system and typically takes no more than 20 minutes to perform. Once the test is complete and the system is refilled with fresh, high-quality hydraulic fluid, the Mercedes-Benz ABC system is revitalized, contributing to a smoother, more responsive, and safer driving experience.
