Mercedes Molto: Celebrating a Lifetime of Entrepreneurship and Fashion Innovation

Mercedes Molto, the founder of Tutto Piccolo Group, was honored with the prestigious Dona de l’any 2010 award on March 9th, a recognition of her remarkable professional journey, her resilient and enterprising spirit, and her significant contribution to promoting Alcoy on a global scale. This accolade celebrates Mercedes Molto’s enduring impact as a pioneering woman in business and fashion.

Molto’s path to success began unconventionally. At 19, she stepped away from formal education to marry Desiderio Mataix, a businessman in the textile industry. When Mataix SA faced closure, the couple confronted an uncertain future. It was during this period of change that Mercedes Molto’s entrepreneurial vision began to emerge. Initially exploring opportunities like selling Thermomix, it was her keen observation of market trends that sparked the idea for a new venture. Recognizing an untapped demand, Mercedes Molto identified a niche for stylish children’s tracksuits. With her foundational knowledge of pattern making acquired in school, she designed three initial models. Despite an initial setback when a Valencia shopping center declined her designs, a small boutique in Valencia recognized their potential, placing the first order. This initial success quickly expanded to Bilbao, leading to a significant order for three hundred tracksuits in various sizes.

This marked the inception of Tutto Piccolo in 1978. Mercedes Molto took charge of design and pattern creation, leveraging her creative talents, while her husband managed the business operations. The company name, Tutto Piccolo, meaning “everything small” in Italian, was her deliberate choice, reflecting the prevailing influence of Italian products in the market at the time. This strategic decision to adopt an Italian-sounding name contributed to the brand’s early appeal. Over time, Tutto Piccolo expanded its brand portfolio, incorporating Cri-Cri and later collaborating with Agatha Ruiz de la Prada Baby, further solidifying its position in the children’s fashion industry.

The selection of Mercedes Molto for the Dona de l’any 2010 award was made by a distinguished jury of seven women representing the diverse community of Alcoy. Chosen by the Ciudad newspaper, this jury annually recognizes outstanding women in the region.

The award ceremony for Mercedes Molto took place on March 9th at the Teatro Calderón, hosted by Ciudad. The award itself, a unique wooden statue, was designed by Daniel Rodriguez, a student at Escola d’Art, and meticulously handcrafted by German Payà Peidro. This handcrafted award serves as a fitting tribute to Mercedes Molto’s dedication and artistry in the world of fashion and business.
