The heart of the Mercedes Cla Ev is its substantial 85-kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery. While markets outside the U.S. might see a smaller battery option, the 85-kWh pack is anticipated to be the standard offering for American consumers, emphasizing a focus on maximizing range. Powering the rear wheels is a robust 200-kW (268-horsepower) drive unit. Adding to the performance capability is an 80-kW (107-horsepower) “boost motor” on the front axle, enabling all-wheel drive when needed. Mercedes engineers have designed this front motor to decouple in a mere 0.2 seconds when not required, optimizing efficiency. Mercedes projects a top speed of 130 mph for the CLA EV, aligning it with typical autobahn-capable German engineering.
Range is a critical factor for EV adoption, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV aims to impress. According to Timo Stegmaier, head of electric compact and midsize cars at Mercedes-Benz, the CLA EV is projected to exceed 750 kilometers (over 466 miles) on the European WLTP testing cycle. It’s important to note that the WLTP cycle is generally more optimistic than the U.S. EPA standards. Real-world EPA range figures will likely be somewhat lower, but even a slightly reduced EPA range would still position the CLA EV as a leader in its class for long-distance capability.
Complementing the impressive range is the CLA EV’s advanced 800-volt electrical architecture. This high-voltage system enables rapid charging, with peak energy intake rates reaching up to 320 kW. In practical terms, this translates to adding approximately 185 miles of range in a mere 10 minutes at a compatible high-speed charging station, according to Stegmaier. This rapid charging capability significantly reduces charging times, making long journeys in the Mercedes CLA EV more convenient and practical.
While the hybrid CLA offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for enhanced fuel efficiency and smoother stop-start operation, the all-electric Mercedes CLA EV clearly represents the future direction of the brand.
