The 2014 B-Class Electric Drive was engineered to deliver a surprisingly dynamic driving experience. Its brisk acceleration and near-silent operation offered a unique and refined driving sensation. Occupants were treated to the familiar Mercedes-Benz comfort, characterized by a well-appointed, high-quality interior with ample space. This electric B-Class provided driving pleasure without local emissions, effectively encapsulating premium electric mobility.

Powerful Electric Performance and Range

Based on the conventionally powered B-Class, a successful model globally since 2011, the Electric Drive variant extended the B-Class concept to environmentally conscious driving at the premium Mercedes-Benz level. Initially, in the US market, it was introduced exclusively with a battery electric powertrain.

Propulsion came from a quiet and emission-free electric motor producing over 134 horsepower (100 kW). Crucially, the electric motor delivered maximum torque of 228 lb.-ft. from the moment the accelerator was engaged. This instant torque delivery is comparable to a 3.0-liter gasoline engine, resulting in rapid acceleration from a standstill. The 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) sprint was achieved in under ten seconds, ensuring responsive performance and an engaging driving experience in diverse driving situations.

The high-capacity lithium-ion battery pack was intelligently integrated into the vehicle’s underfloor within the “Energy Space.” This space-saving and safety-conscious design preserved the five-seater configuration and the generous interior and luggage space typical of the B-Class.

Extended Emission-Free Range and Convenient Charging

To optimize driving range, the top speed was electronically limited to 100 mph (160 km/h). The B-Class Electric Drive offered a range of approximately 115 miles (200 kilometers) based on driving cycle assessments. This range capability made it suitable not only for urban driving and shorter trips but also for longer commutes, addressing the daily driving needs of many drivers. Recharging the battery was designed for convenience, compatible with standard domestic power outlets. In the US, replenishing the battery for a 60-mile (100-kilometer) range took less than 2 hours using a 240 V/40 A power supply.

Furthermore, the electric drive system incorporated regenerative braking. During deceleration and braking, kinetic energy was converted back into electricity and fed back into the battery, enhancing energy efficiency.

Dynamic Design, Inside and Out

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive maintained the brand’s design philosophy of refined sportiness and visual appeal. It featured assertive lines and carefully considered details. The front and rear design emphasized width, with a prominent grille, wraparound headlamps, a wide rear window, split taillights, and a practical tailgate with a low loading sill. Dynamic side sill panels and striking bumpers with bar-shaped LED daytime running lights further enhanced its sporty aesthetic. The charging port was discreetly positioned behind a charging flap.

The interior reinforced Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to high comfort standards. Premium materials, finely textured surfaces, and meticulous finishing underscored the luxury electric driving experience. Sporty round air vents with uniquely styled cross-form nozzles added to the interior’s emotional design. The centrally located display screen for the telematics system appeared to float, a modern and visually striking cockpit element.

Advanced Connectivity and Technology

In terms of infotainment and communication, the B-Class Electric Drive provided the convenience and functionality expected of a luxury Mercedes-Benz. Standard features included Audio 20 with a 14.7 cm color screen, twin tuner, MP3-compatible CD player, and USB connectivity. Becker® MAP PILOT navigation was included, with the option to upgrade to the COMAND Online multimedia system offering internet access, advanced navigation, and voice control.

The instrument cluster was enhanced with electric vehicle-specific displays. A power meter replaced the traditional tachometer, indicating power consumption and regeneration levels.

The B-Class Electric Drive was designed for seamless connectivity, allowing for remote vehicle monitoring and configuration via the Vehicle Homepage. Owners could access vehicle status information, including battery charge level and range, via the internet using a PC or smartphone. Route planning could be optimized by displaying charging locations along the way. Pre-entry climate control, enabling timed pre-heating or cooling, further enhanced convenience and set a benchmark in its class.

Uncompromising Safety Features

Mercedes-Benz prioritized safety in the B-Class Electric Drive. The “Energy Space” battery packaging provided inherent crash protection. Furthermore, the vehicle came standard with COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based accident warning system with adaptive Brake Assist. This system warned drivers of potential obstacles, prepared braking assistance, and actively supported braking when necessary, significantly reducing the risk of rear-end collisions. Optional advanced driver assistance systems, such as Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Active Park Assist, were also available.
