Upgrade Your Mercedes Audio: Adding a Powerful Subwoofer to Audio 40 System

Improving the audio in your Mercedes-Benz doesn’t have to mean complicated modifications. For many Mercedes owners with the Audio 40 system, the stock setup lacks the rich, deep bass that can truly elevate your listening experience. This guide shares a straightforward DIY approach to significantly enhance your Mercedes audio by integrating a powerful aftermarket subwoofer, while keeping the installation as close to OEM standards as possible. Inspired by community insights and readily available components, this upgrade focuses on ease of installation and delivering a noticeable sonic improvement, particularly in the low-end frequencies provided by a dedicated Mercedes Subwoofer.

The goal was to achieve a substantial audio upgrade in my Mercedes without making irreversible changes or creating a visually obvious aftermarket installation. Drawing inspiration from other DIY enthusiasts in the Mercedes community, particularly a helpful post detailing amplifier installation, I set out to add a mercedes subwoofer and improve the overall sound quality. Key criteria included maintaining a factory look, maximizing sonic improvement with minimal effort, and ensuring the upgrade remained discreet.

To start, retaining the factory head unit, the Audio 40, was crucial. To tap into the existing system without cutting any original wiring, a specialized wiring harness was essential. After research, the Audiotec Fischer PP-MQS-1.4 harness was identified as the perfect solution. Sourcing this harness required contacting their US distributor, MSC America, to locate a local dealer. This harness allows for a plug-and-play connection to the Audio 40 system. To ensure compatibility with aftermarket components and manage potential load issues with the Audio 40, the Kicker 46KISLOAD4 smart radio interface was selected. This interface acts as a buffer and ensures smooth integration.

For the heart of the audio upgrade, the Alpine PWD-X5 all-in-one amplifier and powered mercedes subwoofer was chosen. This compact unit combines a multi-channel amplifier for the existing speakers with a dedicated powered subwoofer, simplifying installation and providing a comprehensive audio upgrade in a single unit. The Alpine PWD-X5 allows for high-pass filtering to clean up the signal to the stock speakers and a powerful low-frequency output for the new mercedes subwoofer.

The installation process involved bench splicing the Audiotec Fischer harness with the Kicker interface inputs and outputs. Specifically, the Audiotec Fischer harness was connected to the speaker inputs of the Kicker interface, and the Kicker interface output harness was then connected to the high-level speaker inputs of the Alpine PWD-X5. The amplified outputs from the Alpine were then spliced back into the output side of the Audiotec Fischer harness. This pre-wiring on the bench made the in-vehicle installation truly plug-and-play. Power and ground for the amplifier were tapped from readily available points under the driver’s seat, connecting directly to the battery to minimize potential drain issues and ensure reliable power for the mercedes subwoofer.

To keep the area between the seats accessible, a custom cover was fabricated from 3/8 inch plywood. This cover fits snugly in the space between the seats and the ventilation hump. Reinforcements were added to minimize flexing, ensuring a stable platform. Notches were incorporated into the cover design to maintain access to wiring and charging cables. The speaker cover itself is magnetically attached, using strong magnets sourced from KJmagnetics.com (recommended for their rattle-free performance over generic magnets). Installation of the carpeted cover requires temporarily unbolting at least one seat for proper fitting.

Even without professional tuning, the immediate improvement in sound quality was remarkable. The clarity of the stock speakers was significantly enhanced, revealing previously unheard details in vocals and instrumentation. The addition of the mercedes subwoofer brought a deep, impactful low-end presence that was completely missing from the factory system. The bass is powerful and clean, outperforming premium OEM systems found in vehicles like a 2007 RAV4 (JBL) and 2017 Accord, and even surpassing the MBUX systems in newer Mercedes loaner vehicles experienced. While not reaching the window-rattling levels of a dedicated 10-inch subwoofer setup, the mercedes subwoofer in this upgrade delivers more than enough bass to satisfy most listeners, adding a rich and immersive dimension to the audio experience in the Mercedes.

While a professional RTA tune is planned for further optimization, the initial results of this mercedes subwoofer upgrade are already exceptionally satisfying.
