Ah, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. For decades, it has stood as a symbol of automotive excellence, renowned for its unparalleled comfort, exceptional build quality, and sophisticated luxury. When the opportunity arose to spend time with the E-Class, specifically the E300 model, I was intrigued. While part of me yearned for the raw power of the E550 or the fuel-efficient torque of the E350 BlueTEC, I approached the E300 with an open mind, eager to discover what this entry-level variant of the esteemed E-Class had to offer. Having previously experienced the thrill of an AMG SLS, my appetite for Mercedes-Benz engineering was certainly whetted, and the E300 promised a different, yet equally compelling experience.
The Mercedes-Benz E300 serves as the gateway to the E-Class family, and with a starting price around CDN $58,300, it positions itself as an accessible entry point into luxury motoring. The model I tested, equipped with additional features, came in at CDN $63,250. But does this “entry-level” designation translate to a compromised Mercedes-Benz experience? Let’s delve into the details.
Engine and Performance
On paper, the Mercedes-Benz E300’s engine specifications might initially seem modest, particularly in an era where horsepower figures often dominate automotive discussions. However, it’s crucial to remember that modern engine technology, especially in luxury vehicles, prioritizes refined power delivery and efficiency over sheer brute force. Mercedes-Benz, like many manufacturers, has shifted towards smaller displacement engines augmented by turbocharging, optimizing performance and fuel economy.
The heart of the E300 is a responsive 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing a respectable 248 horsepower at 6,500 RPM. More importantly for everyday driving, it generates 251 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 RPM. This power is seamlessly channeled through a smooth-shifting 7-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels via Mercedes-Benz’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. This combination ensures confident traction and composed handling in various driving conditions.
Fuel efficiency is a notable strength of the E300. Official figures rate it at 11.1 L/100 km (21 mpg) in urban environments and an impressive 7.0 L/100km (34 mpg) on highways. During my week-long test, predominantly in city driving with heavy traffic and occasional bursts of speed, I achieved an average of 11.1 L/100 km (21 mpg), mirroring the city rating. This real-world fuel economy is commendable for a 4000-pound all-wheel-drive luxury sedan, especially considering my driving style wasn’t focused on maximizing fuel conservation. The 80-liter fuel tank capacity further enhances its touring capability, making it well-suited for long journeys.
Exterior Design
The exterior styling of this generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class marks a departure from the flowing curves of its predecessors. It embraces a more sculpted and angular aesthetic, characterized by taut lines and a subtly raised rear profile. Despite being introduced several years prior to this review, the design has aged gracefully, maintaining a contemporary and sophisticated presence on the road.
The upright grille commands attention, seamlessly integrated into a front fascia that flows elegantly back over the hood. The prominent HID headlights contribute to an assertive front-end appearance, while LED daytime running lights, integrated into a horizontal chrome strip on the lower front bumper, add a distinctive and modern signature.
The vehicle’s profile is defined by rising lines and creases that converge towards the rear, imparting a subtle wedge shape. While possessing a substantial feel, the overall design exudes an air of solidity and refinement, as if sculpted from a single block of material. The extended flanks contribute to a visually stretched and sophisticated silhouette, giving the sedan a sense of motion even when stationary.
The rear of the E300 is broad and confidently styled, featuring LED taillights, wide rectangular exhaust outlets, and clean, uncluttered lines. The standard 17-inch alloy wheels are handsome, although some may find them slightly undersized by modern standards. For those seeking a more assertive stance, 18-inch wheel upgrades are available.
Interior and Cabin Comfort
Stepping inside the Mercedes-Benz E300 is an exercise in understated luxury. The interior is meticulously crafted with impeccable fit and finish, employing high-quality materials throughout. Soft-touch plastics, rich dark wood trim, supple leather upholstery, and thoughtfully chosen textures combine harmoniously to create an atmosphere of refined elegance. The ambiance is less about overt opulence and more about a sophisticated, business-like environment – a “Teutonic office” as the original review aptly describes it. It’s luxurious, but with a serious and focused demeanor.
The leather-clad, power-adjustable, and heated front seats are firmer than some might anticipate in a luxury sedan, yet they provide exceptional comfort and adequate lateral support. Both front seats feature a convenient 3-position memory function.
The dashboard design feels relatively shallow, contributing to a sense of spaciousness, and the driving position is notably forward. The elegant, power-adjustable, and heated steering wheel is equipped with intuitive controls for the driver information display, hands-free phone functionality, and the media system. Behind the steering wheel, the instrument cluster is clear and easily legible. A central speedometer with a distinctive floating indicator needle dominates the cluster, incorporating a crisp circular multi-function screen within its center. To the right, a tachometer and temperature gauges are positioned, while the left side houses an analog clock and the fuel gauge, blending classic and modern elements.
The center of the dashboard features a central infotainment screen. Beneath it, a somewhat dense array of identically sized buttons controls the audio system, followed by a user-friendly dual-zone automatic climate control system. The center console houses storage compartments, the COMAND system controller, and a central armrest. Notably absent from the console is the gear selector; in a nod to Mercedes-Benz’s heritage, the E300 employs a column-mounted gear selector stalk. While initially appearing unconventional in a modern car, this placement is surprisingly intelligent, freeing up valuable space on the center console and proving to be ergonomically efficient once accustomed to it.
Technology and Convenience Features
The central infotainment screen, while perhaps not the largest available in its class, is remarkably sharp and bright. It is controlled by Mercedes-Benz’s COMAND system, which utilizes a rotary dial and joystick-style controller located on the center console. While the COMAND interface may have a slight learning curve initially, it becomes intuitive and functional with familiarization. The system manages audio functions, navigation, phone integration, and the rearview camera display.
The rearview camera provides a clear image, although it lacks dynamic trajectory lines. However, front and rear parking distance sensors, accompanied by audible beeps and visual indicators on the dashboard and rear shelf, offer effective parking assistance.
The standard audio system delivers good sound quality, and for audiophiles, an upgrade to a premium Logic 7 harman/kardon system, including satellite radio, is available. Media sources include AM, FM radio, CD player, USB input, auxiliary input, and various proprietary connectors for older iPod devices.
The lower portion of the driver information screen within the speedometer displays essential information such as outside temperature, selected gear, and lane departure warning status. The upper two-thirds of the screen can be configured to display various functions, including telephone, navigation prompts, audio system information, trip data, fuel economy figures, vehicle settings, service indicators, and driver-assistance system settings.
A power tilt/slide sunroof is included, along with a power-operated rear window sunshade for enhanced rear passenger comfort. The key fob, while resembling a traditional key in shape, is inserted into a slot on the dashboard and turned to start the vehicle, despite lacking a conventional key blade. Power-operated features abound, including door locks, windows, and folding side mirrors. The trunk can be conveniently opened via a power release button on the driver’s door, and a power-closing button is located on the trunk lid itself.
The E300 is equipped with a suite of driver-assistance systems, including lane departure warning, which provides haptic feedback through the steering wheel if the vehicle drifts out of its lane. A blind-spot monitoring system illuminates orange or red triangles in the side mirrors to alert the driver to vehicles in adjacent lanes. These and other safety features contribute to a sense of security and driver confidence.
Rear Passenger Space and Comfort
The rear seating area of the Mercedes-Benz E300 comfortably accommodates three passengers, with three seats, seatbelts, and headrests provided. The seats themselves are comfortable, although lacking significant side bolstering. Rear legroom is generous, and headroom is ample, even for taller occupants.
The middle rear seat is narrower and slightly raised, and the prominent central floor tunnel, housing the driveshaft, somewhat compromises foot space for the middle passenger. Despite these minor limitations, the rear seats are generally well-suited for passengers, and in the original review’s experience, children found the rear compartment to be spacious and comfortable.
Rear amenities include seatback map pockets and ceiling-mounted adjustable reading lights. The rear of the center console incorporates adjustable air vents, a pop-out ashtray, and a 12V power outlet. The inclusion of an ashtray, even in modern vehicles, reflects a traditional design element often found in German automobiles.
The middle seatback folds down to serve as a central armrest, revealing a small mesh storage pocket. The armrest itself contains a storage bin and pop-out cupholders. The rear door bins, however, are rather shallow and offer limited practical storage. For families with young children, two sets of ISOFIX connectors are provided for secure child seat installation. Overall, the rear seat area of the E300 is a pleasant and comfortable space for passengers.
Storage Solutions
Thoughtful storage solutions are integrated throughout the Mercedes-Benz E300’s cabin. At the front of the center console, a sliding lid conceals storage compartments. The lid can be partially slid forward to access two cupholders, or fully retracted to expose an ashtray and a cigarette lighter.
The center armrest features a split-opening “clam-shell” lid, revealing further storage space and housing the USB and media connection ports. The glove compartment is generously sized and offers practical storage capacity. A clever detail is the flip-down storage bin located beneath the thigh support of the front seats, providing a discreet and easily accessible space for small items.
The trunk is spacious and deep, with a conveniently low load floor height. A ski pass-through is included for transporting longer items. The trunk is equipped with sturdy tie-down loops and adjustable mesh pockets that can be folded away when not in use, enhancing cargo organization.
A particularly innovative trunk feature is an integrated storage frame located at the top of the trunk. Pulling the frame forward reveals a soft tray within an opening, suitable for storing flat items. Remarkably, the soft bag within the frame can be extended downwards, creating a large, flexible storage bag that reaches almost to the trunk floor. This ingenious system is ideal for securing items and preventing them from rolling around in the trunk, and it can be retracted back into the frame with the push of a button.
On the Road: Driving Experience
Despite its “entry-level” positioning within the E-Class range, the Mercedes-Benz E300 never feels underpowered in real-world driving scenarios. While not possessing the outright acceleration of higher-performance variants, the engine and transmission work harmoniously to deliver responsive and refined performance. Acceleration from a standstill is smooth and lag-free, and the car performs admirably in urban traffic and highway cruising. When brisk acceleration is required, the E300 responds with ample power, never feeling strained. Its 0-60 mph acceleration time of 7.4 seconds is respectable for a luxury sedan in its class.
The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system operates seamlessly and unobtrusively in normal driving, providing enhanced traction and stability, particularly beneficial in inclement weather conditions.
The ride quality of the E300 is truly exceptional. It exemplifies Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to comfort and luxury, delivering one of the most refined and luxurious suspensions experienced. The suspension effectively absorbs road imperfections, from minor irregularities to larger bumps and potholes, providing a remarkably smooth and composed ride.
Handling is tuned for comfort rather than outright sportiness. While the E300 remains competent in corners and capable of executing emergency maneuvers with composure, the softer suspension results in a degree of body roll during more spirited driving. However, in typical daily driving, handling is more than adequate, and the car excels at effortlessly covering long distances on highways.
The steering system features variable assist, providing light and effortless steering at low speeds for parking and maneuvering. However, at lower speeds, the steering response can feel overly sensitive, requiring a period of adjustment to become accustomed to the steering ratio. During normal driving speeds, the steering becomes more substantial, although it can feel somewhat numb, prioritizing ease of use over direct feedback.
Noise isolation is another area where the E300 excels. Road noise, engine noise, and wind noise are remarkably well suppressed at all speeds, creating a serene and hushed cabin environment. The only exception is during hard acceleration, when a muted and pleasant snarl from the V6 engine becomes audible.
The 7-speed automatic transmission offers selectable driving modes, including Economy and Sport. Economy mode prioritizes fuel efficiency by upshifting quickly, while Sport mode holds gears for longer, providing slightly more responsive performance. Manual gear changes can be executed using steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, although the transmission performs admirably in automatic mode, offering smooth, imperceptible gear shifts and consistently selecting the appropriate gear for the driving situation.
The brakes are linear, responsive, and provide confident stopping power. Visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent, thanks to the sloping hood design and generous glass area. Forward and side visibility are particularly impressive, and rear and over-the-shoulder visibility are also commendable.
Throughout the driving experience, the Mercedes-Benz E300 imparts a sense of solidity and vault-like construction, contributing to an overall feeling of quality and refinement.
Notable Details
A distinctive feature of the Mercedes-Benz E300 is the classic hood ornament – the iconic three-pointed star standing proudly at the leading edge of the hood, a timeless symbol of the brand’s heritage.
Minor Annoyances
One ergonomic quirk noted in the original review is the placement of the turn signal stalk, positioned slightly lower on the steering column than in many other vehicles. Compounding this, the cruise control stalk is located in the more typical position for a turn signal stalk. This unconventional arrangement can lead to initial confusion, with drivers inadvertently activating cruise control when intending to signal a turn. While drivers acclimate to this layout over time, it is a noteworthy ergonomic idiosyncrasy.
Final Verdict
The Mercedes-Benz E300 successfully dispels any preconceived notions of being a compromised “entry-level” luxury sedan. It delivers a refined and satisfying driving experience, offering a compelling blend of comfort, luxury, and fuel efficiency.
I rate the Mercedes-Benz E300 an 8 out of 10.
The “Wife Acceptance Factor” (WAF) was notably high, with praise for its smooth ride, solid feel, comfortable rear seats for children, and a general sense of safety. The power trunk opener/closer and the innovative trunk storage basket were also well-received features. The only shared point of criticism was the unconventional placement of the turn signal and cruise control stalks.
Despite its modern features and technology, the E300 retains the core values that have defined the Mercedes-Benz E-Class for generations. The presence of the hood ornament, while seemingly traditional, evokes a sense of quality, safety, and brand prestige – a subtle yet powerful reminder of the Mercedes-Benz legacy.
The E300 embodies solidity and substance in its construction and driving dynamics. It feels substantial in a positive sense – a car built to last and engineered to excel in all aspects of its intended purpose. It is equally comfortable navigating city streets and cruising on highways, catering to the needs of both driver and passengers with a focus on comfort and safety. For those seeking a well-rounded luxury sedan that prioritizes these qualities, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 is a highly recommendable choice.
