AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed Sports Transmission
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission is a key component in delivering the CLS 63 AMG’s exhilarating driving experience. This transmission offers a range of customizable settings to suit various driving styles and conditions. Four distinct drive programs – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus), and “M” (Manual) – allow drivers to tailor the car’s responsiveness to their preferences.
In “C” mode, the transmission prioritizes smooth and comfortable gear changes, activating the ECO start/stop function to enhance fuel efficiency by shutting off the V8 engine at idle. The car typically starts in second gear in this mode for smoother launches. Switching to “S”, “S+”, or “M” modes transforms the driving character, sharpening engine and transmission response and deactivating the ECO start/stop function. These modes are designed for a more engaging and sporty driving experience, featuring rapid gear shifts accompanied by a thrilling sound, achieved through momentary suppression of ignition and injection during full-throttle upshifts. Standard features also include automatic rev-matching during downshifts and RACE START for optimized launch control.
Performance-Oriented All-Wheel Drive: Maximizing Driving Excitement
The AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system in the CLS 63 AMG is engineered to maximize driving enjoyment while ensuring exceptional traction and control. Its rear-biased torque distribution (33:67 front to rear) provides the characteristic agility and handling feel of a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, enhanced by the benefits of all-wheel traction. The 3-stage ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) system is specifically calibrated to work in harmony with the all-wheel-drive system. In “SPORT Handling” mode, the Torque Vectoring Brake system further enhances agility by selectively braking individual wheels to induce precise turn-in and neutral steering behavior during cornering.
The core of the AMG 4MATIC system is a transfer case seamlessly integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission. This compact design minimizes added weight, contributing only approximately 155 lbs to the vehicle. Power is transferred to the front differential via a propeller shaft, and an intermediate shaft running through a sealed duct in the engine oil pan delivers power to the left front wheel. A multi-plate clutch with a 37 lb.-ft. locking force regulates torque distribution to all four wheels as needed, optimizing traction in various driving scenarios.
