I’m experiencing issues with my 1998 Mercedes ML320 starting after replacing the fuel pump and filter. A service manager suggested the key might need reprogramming, a known problem for 98 Mercedes ML320s if the car battery drains. He mentioned these models have keys that send RF signals to the car’s computer for starting, not just a mechanical key.
He advised trying a reprogramming sequence: hold the “unarm” button while pressing the “arm” button five times, then insert the key and try to start. Unfortunately, this didn’t work for my 98 mercedes ML320.
After attempting this, and possibly coincidentally after changing the remote batteries, the remote key fob now doesn’t even lock or unlock the doors remotely on my 98 mercedes.
The service manager mentioned that if the reprogramming attempt failed, the 98 mercedes ML320 would need to be towed to the dealership for reprogramming, requiring both the car and key.
I’m looking for advice on how to reset the security system on this 1998 mercedes ML320, especially since I replaced the original Bose head unit with an aftermarket one, preventing the use of the stereo theft code reset method. Is there another way to get the remote working again and potentially resolve the starting issue on my 98 mercedes?
I am also planning to check the crankshaft position sensor and try to obtain a manual from the dealer for my 98 mercedes ML320. Any suggestions on resetting the security system or getting the key fob working again on this 98 mercedes would be greatly appreciated.
