The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S has cemented its position as the king of the Nürburgring Nordschleife for luxury vehicles. This four-door coupe from Affalterbach has not only reclaimed the top spot but has also significantly improved upon its own previous record, showcasing advancements in engineering and performance tuning. Driven by AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert, the refreshed AMG GT 63 S has set a blistering new lap time on the infamous “Green Hell,” definitively placing it at the pinnacle of the luxury class.
In a stunning display of automotive prowess, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S achieved a lap time that shaved 2.3 seconds off its previous best, set in 2018. The official, notary-certified times are an astounding 7:23.009 minutes for the 12.8-mile circuit (without straight-line measurement at T13) and 7:27.800 minutes for the full 12.944-mile track (including straight-line measurement at T13). This latter time is the one officially recognized and listed by Nürburgring GmbH, firmly establishing Mercedes-AMG’s dominance in the luxury category once again.
The record-breaking Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S was in completely standard production form, a testament to its inherent capabilities straight from the factory. However, it is exceptionally well-equipped for such high-performance feats. Key features that contributed to this record include the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, active rear-axle steering for enhanced agility, an electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential for optimal traction, and the AMG DYNAMICS agility program to fine-tune the driving experience. Further enhancing grip and cornering performance were the optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires, available to customers seeking peak performance. The record-setting vehicle was also fitted with the optional AMG Aerodynamics Package, which further improves stability at high speeds and reduces drag.
“Even though I’ve been involved with the GT 63’s development for many years, it’s always impressive to witness the breadth of capability we’ve achieved with this exclusive car,” stated Demian Schaffert. “This is especially evident after the recent subtle updates. On one hand, the four-door coupe offers comfort and numerous intelligent safety features for daily driving. On the other hand, it provides an exceptionally high level of driving dynamics and precision, as we’ve once again demonstrated on the demanding Nordschleife.”
The record attempt was conducted under less than ideal conditions. Patches of dampness dotted sections of the demanding Nordschleife, and ambient temperatures hovered around 44.6 degrees Fahrenheit, with the asphalt at a chilly 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite these challenges, Schaffert expertly maximized the potential of the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S. Utilizing the RACE driving program, the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension system sharpened damper settings, and steering became more direct. The AMG DYNAMICS agility program, in “Master” mode, fully exploited the all-wheel-drive system and the rapid response of the electronic limited-slip differential to ensure maximum dynamic response. For driver safety during the record attempt, the vehicle was equipped with a racing bucket seat and four-point seat belts.
The record lap was meticulously timed by neutral experts from “wige SOLUTIONS,” and an independent notary public certified both the vehicle’s condition and the lap time itself, ensuring the legitimacy of the achievement. Understanding Nürburgring Lap Time Variations
It’s important to note that two different lap times are often cited for the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. This legendary track is a crucial testing ground for Mercedes-AMG vehicles, and setting a record lap here is a rigorous validation of a sports car’s capabilities. The two lap variations are based on slightly different track lengths: 12.8 miles and 12.944 miles.
The 12.8-mile circuit has been the standard benchmark since 1997, largely due to its adoption by the German magazine sport auto for their “Supertest” evaluations. Historically, this measurement omits the short straight at the T13 grandstand. Timing begins at the end of the T13 grandstand (northbound) and ends at the start of the T13 grandstand (southbound), resulting in a flying start but not a complete lap.
In 2019, the official Nürburgring lap, organized by Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG, was introduced. This lap is slightly longer at 12.944 miles because the start and finish lines are identical within the T13 section, measuring a complete Nordschleife lap with a flying start.
For record recognition, both lap times require stringent verification, including calibrated photoelectric sensor technology for timekeeping and notary supervision to certify the timing, vehicle condition, and tire specifications. Vehicle class classifications adhere to the official categories defined by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
