Mercedes-AMG was gearing up to challenge BMW’s iconic M3 with a compelling contender: the AMG version of the then-upcoming C-Class coupe. This model, sharing a platform with the E-Class coupe but designed to attract a younger demographic, was poised to inject serious performance into the luxury coupe segment.
Under the hood, the 2012 C-Class AMG coupe was expected to house a slightly detuned variant of AMG’s newly developed 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. While turbocharging was the anticipated route, whispers of a naturally aspirated version also circulated, adding an element of intrigue. Another possibility mentioned was a turbocharged V-6, suggesting AMG was exploring various avenues to deliver exhilarating power. The eventual nameplate, speculated to be C63 if the turbo 5.5-liter V8 was chosen, hinged on the final engine selection. A naturally aspirated V8 or a V6 might have resulted in a different designation altogether. Regardless of the powerplant, the top speed was projected to be electronically limited to 155 mph, with an optional AMG package to elevate this to a governed 174 mph for those seeking even greater velocity.
Visually, the AMG C-Class coupe was set to make a bold statement. Quadruple, large exhaust outlets were a signature AMG touch, signaling the performance within. Large 18- or 19-inch AMG wheels would fill the wheel arches, enhancing both aesthetics and handling. A noticeable rear spoiler, seamlessly integrated into the shoulder line’s upward sweep, would contribute to aerodynamic stability. Furthermore, an aero package was expected to further refine the car’s aerodynamic profile. The front of the vehicle was anticipated to be dominated by substantial air intakes embedded in the fascia, flanked by assertive LED daytime running light strips, projecting an aggressive and modern face.
Moving inside, the cabin of the AMG coupe was destined to receive unique AMG treatments. Aluminum or carbon-fiber trim elements were planned to replace standard materials, injecting a sporty and premium ambiance. Sports seats, designed to offer enhanced lateral support during spirited driving, were also on the agenda, ensuring occupants remained securely in place even during dynamic maneuvers.
Interestingly, the C-Class coupe was not intended to remain the entry point to the AMG range for long. Mercedes-AMG was already looking at expanding its performance portfolio downwards, with anticipated AMG versions based on the next-generation A- and B-class platforms. These smaller AMGs were rumored to potentially harness turbocharged four-cylinder engines pushing out over 300 horsepower, hinting at a future of potent compact performance machines. However, with the C-Class AMG coupe promising substantial V-8 power and the existence of the formidable Black Series sedan within the C-Class family, the C-Class AMG project, particularly this coupe variant, was clearly positioned as a key and highly anticipated model for the brand.
